Francisco Miguel Morales Sánchez  Director of IMEYMAT

Prof. Dr. Francisco M. Morales has been Full Professor since 2017 and (accredited by ANECA in 2014). He defended his PhD Thesis at Universidad de Cádiz (UCA) in 2003 with the highest score, extraordinary award, ISBN and European Mention. From 2003 to 2005, he was granted post-doctoral scholarships from Marie Curie Program, Max Planck Society and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to work at renowned institutions in Germany. At UCA, he obtained a position as Assistant Professor in 2005 and as “Ramón y Cajal” researcher in 2006 (1st position in “Materials Science and Technology” scoring 99.8/100). In 2007, he was the youngest to obtain the national habilitation as Associate Prof. in Materials Science and Metallurgic Engineering, for which he accessed in 2008. Since 2014, he holds positions of (i) Coordinator of the “Laboratory for Microscopies Sample Preparation”; (ii) Responsible for the “Materialography” qualified technical service; (iii) Director of the Institute of Research on Electron Microscopy and Materials (IMEYMAT); and also, he acts as (iv) Member of the UCA Governing Council since 2017; and (v) Managing Editor of the Electronic Journal B-IMEYMAT ISSN 2659-6717 since 2018.

Dr. Morales owns 3 CNEAI sexenniums and is author of 108 publications (92 indexed, JCR h-index of 18), 1 book, 2 patents, 2 software registrations and 133 conference communications (74 talks, 7 as invited). He has actively taken part of 44 national and international research projects and grants; being the principal or co-principal investigator in 24 of them. Also, he participated in 13 contracts with companies (leading 10 of them). Since 2006, Dr. Morales has directed 3 Bachelor theses, 4 Master theses and 3 international PhD theses among a total of 30 supervised contracts or grants for scientists, technicians and administration staff. He has also supervised 5 department assistant students 2 years each, and 7 trainees in companies. Since 2017, he is advisor (tutor) in 5 more PhD theses (being the director in 2 of them). His research is mainly focused on the application and development of TEM techniques for the study of multiple materials.

Moreover, Dr. Morales has been in research stays at institutions in Jena, Stuttgart, Dresden, Ilmenau and Bilbao, for more than 30 months, all funded by competitive processes. He has used high-level scientific and computational equipment, and was responsible on the acquisition of infrastructure valued in about 6.5M€. He has been a reviewer for 21 indexed top journals, as well as an assessor for 2 international projects, 7 PhD theses, 4 competitions for Professorship positions, 4 Master theses, 11 international selection personnel processes, 1 educational exhibition and several contracts and scholarships.

Other scientific merits are now listed: (i) Member of the Editorial Board in 5 international journals; (ii) Member of the “EXMATEC’2006” International Conference organizing committee, including the Editorial Board for its abstract book and the proceedings book published in the “Physica Status Solidi” journal (as an invited responsible editor); (iii) Chairman in three different occasions for international conferences; or (iv) Management Committee Member of the European Union COST Action MP0805. Other merits are obtained prizes, grants and scholarships; assistance to specialization courses, workshops and meetings; and active participation in 2 projects for the divulgation of R&D and in 24 scientific dissemination events.
